A vulnerability was found in bibutils up to 6.2. It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects the function addsn of the file serialno.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. NULL pointer deference in the addsn function in serialno.c in libbibcore.a in bibutils through 6.2 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash), as demonstrated by copac2xml.
The bug was discovered 04/19/2018. The weakness was published 05/07/2018 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at docs.google.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-10773 since 05/06/2018. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation.
