Spring Framework up to 4.3.16/5.0.5 STOMP Regular Expression input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Spring Framework up to 4.3.16/5.0.5 and classified as problematic. This issue affects an unknown function of the component STOMP. The manipulation as part of a Regular Expression leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

Spring Framework, versions 5.0.x prior to 5.0.6, versions 4.3.x prior to 4.3.17, and older unsupported versions allows applications to expose STOMP over WebSocket endpoints with a simple, in-memory STOMP broker through the spring-messaging module. A malicious user (or attacker) can craft a message to the broker that can lead to a regular expression, denial of service attack.

The bug was discovered 05/09/2018. The weakness was published 05/11/2018 by Muneaki Nishimura (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at pivotal.io. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-1257 since 12/06/2017. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. The successful exploitation requires a simple authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 253353 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2018-1257), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370944 (Pivotal Spring Framework STOMP Messaging ReDoS Vulnerability).

Upgrading to version 4.3.17 or 5.0.6 eliminates this vulnerability.
