Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.15/4.16-rc6 (Operating System). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the component KVM. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-264. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
kernel KVM before versions kernel 4.16, kernel 4.16-rc7, kernel 4.17-rc1, kernel 4.17-rc2 and kernel 4.17-rc3 is vulnerable to a flaw in the way the Linux kernel's KVM hypervisor handled exceptions delivered after a stack switch operation via Mov SS or Pop SS instructions. During the stack switch operation, the processor did not deliver interrupts and exceptions, rather they are delivered once the first instruction after the stack switch is executed. An unprivileged KVM guest user could use this flaw to crash the guest or, potentially, escalate their privileges in the guest.
The bug was discovered 05/08/2018. The weakness was released 05/15/2018 by Andy Lutomirski as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2018-1087 since 12/04/2017. The exploitation appears to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 7 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 110157 (Virtuozzo 6 : cpupools / cpupools-features / etc (VZA-2018-034)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Virtuozzo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 171117 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for the Linux Kernel (SUSE-SU-2018:1171-1)).
Upgrading to version 4.16-rc7 or 4.17-rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (110157) and SecurityFocus (BID 104127†). Entry connected to this vulnerability is available at VDB-116257. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
