Details
A vulnerability was found in Pivotal Spring-integration-zip up to 1.0.1. It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown function. The manipulation as part of a ZIP Archive leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Addresses partial fix in CVE-2018-1261. Pivotal spring-integration-zip, versions prior to 1.0.2, exposes an arbitrary file write vulnerability, that can be achieved using a specially crafted zip archive (affects other archives as well, bzip2, tar, xz, war, cpio, 7z), that holds path traversal filenames. So when the filename gets concatenated to the target extraction directory, the final path ends up outside of the target folder.
The bug was discovered 05/11/2018. The weakness was shared 05/15/2018 (Website). The advisory is shared at pivotal.io. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2018-1263 since 12/06/2017. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 4 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
Upgrading to version 1.0.2 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at SecurityFocus (BID 104179†). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
