QNAP QTS 4.0/4.0.3 Web Interface cgi-bin/jc.cgi f path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in QNAP QTS 4.0/4.0.3 (Network Attached Storage Software). This affects an unknown function of the file cgi-bin/jc.cgi of the component Web Interface. The manipulation of the argument f with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

Absolute path traversal vulnerability in cgi-bin/jc.cgi in QNAP QTS before 4.1.0 allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files via a full pathname in the f parameter.

The weakness was released 01/08/2014 as VU#487078 as confirmed advisory (US CERT). The advisory is shared at kb.cert.org. The public release was coordinated with QNAP. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-7174 since 12/19/2013. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.

After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k.

Upgrading to version 4.1.0 eliminates this vulnerability. It is possible to mitigate the weakness by firewalling tcp/80 (Web Services). The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (90213), SecurityFocus (BID 64719†), OSVDB (101857†), Secunia (SA56374†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1029577†). Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
