Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6/7 (Operating System). Affected is an unknown part of the component DHCP Package. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a command injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-77. The product constructs all or part of a command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended command when it is sent to a downstream component. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
DHCP packages in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 and 7, Fedora 28, and earlier are vulnerable to a command injection flaw in the NetworkManager integration script included in the DHCP client. A malicious DHCP server, or an attacker on the local network able to spoof DHCP responses, could use this flaw to execute arbitrary commands with root privileges on systems using NetworkManager and configured to obtain network configuration using the DHCP protocol.
The bug was discovered 05/16/2018. The weakness was released 05/17/2018 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2018-1111 since 12/04/2017. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1202.
The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as highly functional. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 109827 (Oracle Linux 6 : dhcp (ELSA-2018-1454)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 351258 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for dhcp: ALAS-2018-1024).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 46847.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (44652), Tenable (109827) and SecurityFocus (BID 104195†). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
