Details
A vulnerability has been found in MagniComp sysinfo and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown function of the component File Permission. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a insertion of sensitive information into debugging code vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-215. The product inserts sensitive information into debugging code, which could expose this information if the debugging code is not disabled in production. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
MagniComp SysInfo before 10-H81, as shipped with BMC BladeLogic Automation and other products, contains an information exposure vulnerability in which a local unprivileged user is able to read any root (uid 0) owned file on the system, regardless of the file permissions. Confidential information such as password hashes (/etc/shadow) or other secrets (such as log files or private keys) can be leaked to the attacker. The vulnerability has a confidentiality impact, but has no direct impact on system integrity or availability.
The bug was discovered 02/13/2018. The weakness was presented 05/21/2018 as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2018-7268 since 02/20/2018. The attack needs to be approached locally. The successful exploitation requires a single authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592. The advisory points out:
The SysInfo mcsiwrapper is installed setuid root. The --licensevalid option reads the license file, parses it and returns validity status of the license. Due to an oversight enabling debug output with --debug also outputs the contents of the file to the stderr while performing the parsing, exposing the file contents in the process.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 97 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 371757 (MagniComp SysInfo Information Exposure Vulnerability).
Upgrading to version 10-H81 eliminates this vulnerability.
