In MuPDF 1.12.0 and earlier, multiple use of uninitialized value bugs in the PDF parser could allow an attacker to cause a denial of service (crash) or influence program flow via a crafted file.
The bug was discovered 01/23/2018. The weakness was disclosed 05/24/2018 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). It is possible to read the advisory at git.ghostscript.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2018-1000040 since 02/02/2018. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.ghostscript.com. A possible mitigation has been published 7 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
