Details
A vulnerability was found in Foxit Reader and PhantomPDF up to 9.0 (Document Reader Software). It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown code of the component U3D Image Handler. The manipulation as part of a PDF File leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on vulnerable installations of Foxit Reader before 9.1 and PhantomPDF before 9.1. User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability in that the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file. The specific flaw exists within the processing of specially crafted pdf files with embedded u3d images. Crafted data in the PDF file can trigger an overflow of a heap-based buffer. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code under the context of the current process, a different vulnerability than CVE-2018-5676 and CVE-2018-5678.
The bug was discovered 05/07/2018. The weakness was published 05/24/2018 by Steven Seeley with Zero Day Initiative (Website). The advisory is shared at foxitsoftware.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2018-5674 since 01/12/2018. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 119838 (Foxit PhantomPDF < 9.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370903 (Foxit Reader Multiple Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 9.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
