A vulnerability has been found in Dell EMC RecoverPoint and RecoverPoint for Virtual Machines up to 5.1 (Backup Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block of the component Boxmgmt CLI. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a command injection vulnerability. Dell EMC RecoverPoint versions prior to 5.1.2 and RecoverPoint for VMs versions prior to 5.1.1.3, contains a command injection vulnerability in the Boxmgmt CLI. An authenticated malicious user with boxmgmt privileges may potentially exploit this vulnerability to read RPA files. Note that files that require root permission cannot be read.

The bug was discovered 05/22/2018. The weakness was released 05/29/2018 by Paul as not defined mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). It is possible to read the advisory at seclists.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2018-1242 since 12/06/2017. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The requirement for exploitation is a single authentication.
