Hopper Dissassembler 3.11.20 ELF File out-of-bounds write

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Hopper Dissassembler 3.11.20. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part of the component ELF File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds write vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-787. The product writes data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

An exploitable out of bounds write vulnerability exists in the parsing of ELF Section Headers of Hopper Dissassembler 3.11.20. A specially crafted ELF file can cause attacker controlled pointer arithmetic resulting in a partially controlled out of bounds write. An attacker can craft an ELF file with specific section headers to trigger this vulnerability.

The bug was discovered 10/14/2016. The weakness was released 06/04/2018 by Tyler Bohan with Cisco Talos (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-8390 since 09/29/2016. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication.
