Debug Module on Node.js Regular Expression resource consumption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability was found in Debug Module on Node.js. It has been declared as problematic. The impacted element is an unknown function. Executing a manipulation as part of Regular Expression can lead to resource consumption. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-16137. The attack may be launched remotely. There is no exploit available.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Debug Module on Node.js (JavaScript Library) (version now known). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing. The manipulation as part of a Regular Expression leads to a resource consumption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-400. The product does not properly control the allocation and maintenance of a limited resource, thereby enabling an actor to influence the amount of resources consumed, eventually leading to the exhaustion of available resources. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

The debug module is vulnerable to regular expression denial of service when untrusted user input is passed into the o formatter. It takes around 50k characters to block for 2 seconds making this a low severity issue.

The bug was discovered 09/27/2017. The weakness was shared 06/07/2018 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2017-16137 since 10/29/2017. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1499.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 252 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
