A vulnerability has been found in Microsoft Office 2000/2002/XP (Office Suite Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the component URL Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Buffer overflow in Microsoft Office XP allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a link with a URL file location containing long inputs after (1) "%00 (null byte) in .doc filenames or (2) "%0a" (carriage return) in .rtf filenames.
The bug was discovered 07/13/2004. The weakness was disclosed 02/08/2005 by Rafel Ivgi (The Insider) with Finjan Software Ltd as MS05-005 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2004-0848 since 09/08/2004. The attack can only be initiated within the local network. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2073 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90225 (Microsoft Office XP Vulnerability Could Allow Remote Code Execution (MS05-005)).
Applying the patch MS05-005 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at update.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3257.
