It is possible to spoof the sender's email address and display an arbitrary sender address to the email recipient. The real sender's address is not displayed if preceded by a null character in the display string. This vulnerability affects Thunderbird < 52.5.2.
The bug was discovered 12/22/2017. The weakness was published 06/11/2018 by Sabri Haddouche with Cure53 as Bug 1423432 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction.
