A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Thunderbird, Thunderbird ESR and Firefox ESR up to 52.7 (Mail Client Software). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the component Skia Library. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Mozilla developers backported selected changes in the Skia library. These changes correct memory corruption issues including invalid buffer reads and writes during graphic operations. This vulnerability affects Thunderbird ESR < 52.8, Thunderbird < 52.8, and Firefox ESR < 52.8.
The bug was discovered 05/09/2018. The weakness was released 06/11/2018 with Mozilla as Bug 1454692 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.mozilla.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2018-5183 since 01/03/2018. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation.
