A vulnerability was found in Google Android (Smartphone Operating System) (affected version unknown). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function wmi_set_ie of the component Linux Kernel. The manipulation of the argument ie_len as part of a Argument leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. In the function wmi_set_ie(), the length validation code does not handle unsigned integer overflow properly. As a result, a large value of the 'ie_len' argument can cause a buffer overflow in all Android releases from CAF (Android for MSM, Firefox OS for MSM, QRD Android) using the Linux Kernel.
The bug was discovered 05/11/2018. The weakness was presented 06/12/2018 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at codeaurora.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2018-5848 since 01/19/2018. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 32 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 110636 (SUSE SLES12 Security Update : kernel (SUSE-SU-2018:1761-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 256510 (CentOS Security Update for kernel (CESA-2018:3083)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
