A vulnerability was found in procps and procps-ng up to 3.3.15. It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function proc_pid_readdir. procps-ng, procps is vulnerable to a process hiding through race condition. Since the kernel's proc_pid_readdir() returns PID entries in ascending numeric order, a process occupying a high PID can use inotify events to determine when the process list is being scanned, and fork/exec to obtain a lower PID, thus avoiding enumeration. An unprivileged attacker can hide a process from procps-ng's utilities by exploiting a race condition in reading /proc/PID entries. This vulnerability affects procps and procps-ng up to version 3.3.15, newer versions might be affected also.

The bug was discovered 05/17/2018. The weakness was released 06/13/2018 with Qualys as confirmed mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-1121 since 12/04/2017. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed by Qualys Corporation and been published even before and not after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept.
