A vulnerability was found in procps and procps-ng up to 3.3.15. It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function proc_pid_readdir. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
procps-ng, procps is vulnerable to a process hiding through race condition. Since the kernel's proc_pid_readdir() returns PID entries in ascending numeric order, a process occupying a high PID can use inotify events to determine when the process list is being scanned, and fork/exec to obtain a lower PID, thus avoiding enumeration. An unprivileged attacker can hide a process from procps-ng's utilities by exploiting a race condition in reading /proc/PID entries. This vulnerability affects procps and procps-ng up to version 3.3.15, newer versions might be affected also.
The bug was discovered 05/17/2018. The weakness was released 06/13/2018 with Qualys as confirmed mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-1121 since 12/04/2017. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation.
