A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in SensioLabs Symfony up to 2.7.47/2.8.40/3.3.16/3.4.10/4.0.10 (Programming Tool Software). Affected by this vulnerability is the function PDOSessionHandler of the component HttpFoundation. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a session expiration vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-613. According to WASC, "Insufficient Session Expiration is when a web site permits an attacker to reuse old session credentials or session IDs for authorization." An issue was discovered in the HttpFoundation component in Symfony 2.7.x before 2.7.48, 2.8.x before 2.8.41, 3.3.x before 3.3.17, 3.4.x before 3.4.11, and 4.0.x before 4.0.11. The PDOSessionHandler class allows storing sessions on a PDO connection. Under some configurations and with a well-crafted payload, it was possible to do a denial of service on a Symfony application without too much resources.
The bug was discovered 05/25/2018. The weakness was presented 06/13/2018 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at lists.fedoraproject.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2018-11386 since 05/22/2018. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 19 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 111535 (Debian DSA-4262-1 : symfony - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 277686 (Fedora Security Update for php-symfony3 (FEDORA-2018-c8ddc44bbb)).
Upgrading to version 2.7.48, 2.8.41, 3.3.17, 3.4.11 or 4.0.11 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
