Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.17.2 (Operating System). It has been classified as critical. Affected is an unknown code of the component Page Allocator. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-399. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
** DISPUTED ** An issue was discovered in the Linux kernel through 4.17.2. Since the page allocator does not yield CPU resources to the owner of the oom_lock mutex, a local unprivileged user can trivially lock up the system forever by wasting CPU resources from the page allocator (e.g., via concurrent page fault events) when the global OOM killer is invoked. NOTE: the software maintainer has not accepted certain proposed patches, in part because of a viewpoint that "the underlying problem is non-trivial to handle."
The weakness was published 06/21/2018 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at patchwork.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2016-10723 since 06/21/2018. The attack needs to be approached locally. A authentication is needed for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
The real existence of this vulnerability is still doubted at the moment.
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem.
