A vulnerability was found in Spring Framework up to 4.3.17/5.0.6. It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the component MVC. Spring Framework (versions 5.0.x prior to 5.0.7, versions 4.3.x prior to 4.3.18, and older unsupported versions) allow web applications to change the HTTP request method to any HTTP method (including TRACE) using the HiddenHttpMethodFilter in Spring MVC. If an application has a pre-existing XSS vulnerability, a malicious user (or attacker) can use this filter to escalate to an XST (Cross Site Tracing) attack.
The bug was discovered 06/14/2018. The weakness was disclosed 06/25/2018 (Website). The advisory is available at pivotal.io. This vulnerability was named CVE-2018-11039 since 05/14/2018. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
