Ansible 2.5 prior to 2.5.5, and 2.4 prior to 2.4.5, do not honor the no_log task flag for failed tasks. When the no_log flag has been used to protect sensitive data passed to a task from being logged, and that task does not run successfully, Ansible will expose sensitive data in log files and on the terminal of the user running Ansible.

The bug was discovered 08/03/2018. The weakness was disclosed 07/03/2018 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at access.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2018-10855 since 05/09/2018. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. Upgrading to version 2.4.5 or 2.5.5 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
