A vulnerability has been found in Red Hat Ansible up to 2.4.4/2.5.4 and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown part of the component Log File. Ansible 2.5 prior to 2.5.5, and 2.4 prior to 2.4.5, do not honor the no_log task flag for failed tasks. When the no_log flag has been used to protect sensitive data passed to a task from being logged, and that task does not run successfully, Ansible will expose sensitive data in log files and on the terminal of the user running Ansible.
The bug was discovered 08/03/2018. The weakness was disclosed 07/03/2018 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at access.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2018-10855 since 05/09/2018. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 237089 (Red Hat Update for ansible (RHSA-2019:0054)).
Upgrading to version 2.4.5 or 2.5.5 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
