Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.17.3 (Operating System). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code block in the library fs/xfs/libxfs/xfs_inode_buf.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
An issue was discovered in fs/xfs/libxfs/xfs_inode_buf.c in the Linux kernel through 4.17.3. A denial of service (memory corruption and BUG) can occur for a corrupted xfs image upon encountering an inode that is in extent format, but has more extents than fit in the inode fork.
The bug was discovered 06/21/2018. The weakness was disclosed 07/03/2018 (Website). The advisory is available at bugzilla.kernel.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2018-13095 since 07/03/2018. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 12 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 111243 (Fedora 27 : kernel (2018-8484550fff)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 171490 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for the Linux Kernel (SUSE-SU-2018:2776-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
