Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Check Point Security Gateway R77. This affects an unknown code block of the component Session Authentication Agent. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability (User Credentials). CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality.
The weakness was published 01/22/2014 by Jakub Jozwiak as sk98263 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at supportcenter.checkpoint.com. The public release has been coordinated with Check Point. The exploitability is told to be difficult. Access to the local network is required for this attack. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.
The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with Identity Awareness Software Blade as an alternative. The advisory contains the following remark:
For the attack to be successful, the attacker's machine must be allowed to connect to the end user (client) machine, on which Check Point Session Authentication Agent is running. Proper configuration requires the user to define on his computer the IP address of the Security Gateway, which is allowed to issue authentication requests to Session Authentication Agent running on the client machine. Spoofing the Gateway IP address is not enough in this case, the attacker must complete a TCP handshake with the client's machine (3way handshake) - this reduces the possibility of the attack. Session Authentication Agent feature will be end-of-life in the next major release of 2014. Customers are advised to use Identity Awareness Software Blade instead.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at OSVDB (102418†). Similar entry is available at VDB-66212. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
