Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Windows Client (Backup Software) (version now known). This issue affects some unknown processing of the component Resilient File System. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability (Stored). Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-264. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
The client in IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) 6.3.1 and 6.4.0 on Windows does not preserve permissions of Resilient File System (ReFS) files across backup and restore operations, which allows local users to bypass intended access restrictions via standard filesystem operations.
The weakness was presented 01/22/2014 as swg21662608 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at www-01.ibm.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-5371 since 08/22/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue. The advisory points out:
During TSM Windows client file restore and retrieve operations to an ReFS file system, security permissions of files are not restored or retrieved, even when SKIPNTSECURITYPERMISSIONS NO is in effect (NO is the default value). Instead, the restored or retrieved files will have default permissions. If the default permissions are more permissive, an unauthorized user can gain access to and modify the restored or retrieved files.
After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72203 (IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Client 6.3.1.x < 6.3.2.0 / 6.4.x < 6.4.1.0 ReFS Insecure File Permissions), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows.
Applying the patch IC92933 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at ibm.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (86661), Tenable (72203), SecurityFocus (BID 65102†), OSVDB (102365†) and Secunia (SA56585†). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
