Double free vulnerability in Apple Pages 2.x before 2.1 and 5.x before 5.1 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted Microsoft Word file.
The weakness was published 01/23/2014 by Felix Gröbert with Google Security Team as HT6117 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at support.apple.com. The public release has been coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-1252 since 01/08/2014. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72281 (Apple Pages < 2.1 / 5.1 Microsoft Word Document Handling Double Free Arbitrary Code Execution), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121815 (Apple Mac OS X v10.9.2 and Security Update 2014-001 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2014-02-25-1)).
Upgrading to version 5.1 or 2.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
