Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in libpng 1.6.34 (Image Processing Software). Affected is the function png_check_chunk_length of the file pngrutil.c. The manipulation as part of a PNG File leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
In libpng 1.6.34, a wrong calculation of row_factor in the png_check_chunk_length function (pngrutil.c) may trigger an integer overflow and resultant divide-by-zero while processing a crafted PNG file, leading to a denial of service.
The bug was discovered 06/18/2018. The weakness was released 07/09/2018 with Oracle (Website). The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2018-13785 since 07/09/2018. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 21 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
