A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in FFmpeg 2.1 (Multimedia Processing Software). Affected is the function decode_nal_units of the file libavcodec/h264.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The issue has been introduced in 10/29/2013. The weakness was released 01/18/2014 by Mateusz Jurczyk and Gynvael Coldwind with Google Security Team as h264: reset ref count if decoding the slice header fails as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared for download at git.videolan.org. The public release was coordinated with the vendor. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to launch the attack remotely.
