The advisory is shared for download at portal.msrc.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2018-8279 since 03/14/2018. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. A remote code execution vulnerability exists when Microsoft Edge improperly accesses objects in memory. The vulnerability could corrupt memory in such a way that enables an attacker to execute arbitrary code in the context of the current user. An attacker who successfully exploited the vulnerability could gain the same user rights as the current user. If the current user is logged on with administrative user rights, an attacker could take control of an affected system. An attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 110983 (KB4338819: Windows 10 Version 1803 and Windows Server Version 1803 July 2018 Security Update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 91460 (Microsoft Edge Security Update for July 2018).
