A vulnerability was found in polkit up to 0.115. It has been classified as critical. This affects the function polkit_backend_interactive_authority_check_authorization of the component polkitd. A flaw was found in polkit before version 0.116. The implementation of the polkit_backend_interactive_authority_check_authorization function in polkitd allows to test for authentication and trigger authentication of unrelated processes owned by other users. This may result in a local DoS and information disclosure.
The bug was discovered 07/11/2018. The weakness was disclosed 07/10/2018 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2018-1116 since 12/04/2017. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.

Upgrading to version 0.116 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 6 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
