Details
A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Thunderbird (Mail Client Software) (version now known). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the component HTML Email Handler. The manipulation as part of a Inline SVG Image leads to a privileges management vulnerability (Default Browser Bypass). The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, and integrity.
The weakness was published 01/26/2014 by Mike Cardwell with Cardwell IT Ltd. as Security Bug in Thunderbird - Open Websites in Tabs as not defined posting (Blog). The advisory is available at grepular.com. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
A public exploit has been developed by Mike Cardwell in HTML/SVG and been published immediately after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at grepular.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.
Applying the patch Fix it 700979 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at bug700979.bugzilla.mozilla.org. OSVDB summarizes: "However, Jim Porter has proposed a patch to address this vulnerability, but it has not been confirmed to fully address this issue."
