Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Horde Groupware up to 5.1.0 (Groupware Software). Affected is an unknown functionality in the library framework/util/lib/horde/variables.php of the component Util Library. The manipulation of the argument _formvars with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, and integrity. CVE summarizes:
The framework/Util/lib/Horde/Variables.php script in the Util library in Horde before 5.1.1 allows remote attackers to conduct object injection attacks and execute arbitrary PHP code via a crafted serialized object in the _formvars form.
The weakness was disclosed 06/27/2013 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2014-1691 since 01/28/2014. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.
A public exploit has been developed in Ruby. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. By approaching the search of inurl:framework/util/lib/horde/variables.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72353 (Debian DSA-2853-1 : horde3 - remote code execution), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175269 (Debian Security Update for horde3 (DSA-2853-1)).
Upgrading to version 5.1.1 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at github.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The git commit contains the following remark:
'_formvars' form input must now be JSON encoded, not PHP serialized.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (90747), Exploit-DB (32439), Tenable (72353), SecurityFocus (BID 65200†) and OSVDB (102684†). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
