Minicom up to 2.7.0 VT100 Escape Sequence memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Minicom up to 2.7.0. Affected by this issue is an unknown code block of the component VT100 Escape Sequence Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

A buffer overflow flaw was found in the way minicom before version 2.7.1 handled VT100 escape sequences. A malicious terminal device could potentially use this flaw to crash minicom, or execute arbitrary code in the context of the minicom process.

The bug was discovered 04/18/2017. The weakness was disclosed 07/11/2018 by Alex (oss-sec). The advisory is available at openwall.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2017-7467 since 04/05/2017. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 120 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 102563 (openSUSE Security Update : minicom (openSUSE-2017-947)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 169869 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for minicom (SUSE-SU-2017:1092-1)).

Upgrading to version 2.7.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (102563) and SecurityFocus (BID 97966†). If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
