A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Accellion FTP Server (File Transfer Software). This affects an unknown part of the component Accusoft Prizm Content Flash. Accellion FTP server prior to version FTA_9_12_220 uses the Accusoft Prizm Content flash component, which contains multiple parameters (customTabCategoryName, customButton1Image) that are vulnerable to cross-site scripting.
The bug was discovered 02/08/2017. The weakness was disclosed 07/13/2018 by Ashish Kamble as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). It is possible to read the advisory at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2016-9500 since 11/21/2016. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059.007 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 520 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
Upgrading to version FTA_9_12_220 eliminates this vulnerability.
