Details
A vulnerability was found in FFmpeg 2.1 (Multimedia Processing Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function ff_vc1_parse_frame_header of the file libavcodec/vc1.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability.
The issue has been introduced in 10/29/2013. The weakness was shared 02/01/2014 by Mateusz Jurczyk and Gynvael Coldwind with Google Security Team as avcodec/vc1: reset fcm/field_mode in non advanced header parsing as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared for download at git.videolan.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 95 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
