Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Oracle Java JRE 7u51 (Programming Language Software). Affected by this issue is the function unpacker::redirect_stdio of the component unpack200 Logfile Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a symlink vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-61. The product, when opening a file or directory, does not sufficiently account for when the file is a symbolic link that resolves to a target outside of the intended control sphere. This could allow an attacker to cause the product to operate on unauthorized files. Impacted is confidentiality, and integrity.
The issue has been introduced in 01/14/2014. The weakness was presented 02/03/2014 by Jakub Wilk as #737562 as not defined bug report (Website). The advisory is shared for download at bugs.debian.org. The public release happened without coordination with the vendor. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 20 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at OSVDB (102808†). See VDB-12960 for similar entry. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
