Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Red Hat Ansible up to 2.3.0.x. This issue affects the function lookup of the component lookup-plugin. The manipulation as part of a Unicode leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Ansible before versions 2.3.1.0 and 2.4.0.0 fails to properly mark lookup-plugin results as unsafe. If an attacker could control the results of lookup() calls, they could inject Unicode strings to be parsed by the jinja2 templating system, resulting in code execution. By default, the jinja2 templating language is now marked as 'unsafe' and is not evaluated.
The bug was discovered 06/29/2018. The weakness was released 07/19/2018 with Red Hat as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-7481 since 04/05/2017. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 102813 (RHEL 7 : ansible (RHSA-2017:2524)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 170554 (OpenSUSE Security Update for ansible (openSUSE-SU-2017:2976-1)).
Upgrading to version 2.3.1.0 or 2.4.0.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (102813) and SecurityFocus (BID 98492†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-109785, VDB-117006 and VDB-122337. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
