A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Netgear D6300B 1.0.0.14_1.0.14 (Wireless LAN Software). This issue affects an unknown part of the file /data/nvram of the component Credential Storage. The manipulation as part of a Admin Login Data leads to a cleartext storage vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-312. The product stores sensitive information in cleartext within a resource that might be accessible to another control sphere. Impacted is confidentiality, and integrity.
The bug was discovered 08/02/2013. The weakness was disclosed 02/03/2014 by Marcel Mangold and Pascal Uter with SYSS as SYSS-2013-001 as not defined advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at syss.de. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Netgear. The attack may be initiated remotely. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1555 for this issue.
A public exploit has been developed by Marcel Mangold/Pascal Uter and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at syss.de. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 185 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.
Addressing this vulnerability is possible by firewalling Administrative Access. A possible mitigation has been published 2 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
