There are few web pages associated with the genie app on the Netgear WNDR4500 running firmware version V1.0.1.40_1.0.6877. Genie app adds some capabilities over the Web GUI and can be accessed even when you are away from home. A remote attacker can access genie_ping.htm or genie_ping2.htm or genie_ping3.htm page without authentication. Once accessed, the page will be redirected to the aCongratulations2.htma page, which reveals some sensitive information such as 2.4GHz & 5GHz Wireless Network Name (SSID) and Network Key (Password) in clear text.
The bug was discovered 01/03/2017. The weakness was released 07/24/2018 (Website). The advisory is shared at packetstormsecurity.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2016-5638 since 06/16/2016. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 567 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. By approaching the search of inurl:genie_ping.htm it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 11749 (Netgear DGN2200, DGND3700 and WNDR4500 Sensitive Information Disclosure Vulnerability).
