openstack-neutron up to 7.2.0-12.0/8.3.0-11.0/9.3.1-2.0/10.0.2-1.0 Security Group race condition

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in openstack-neutron up to 7.2.0-12.0/8.3.0-11.0/9.3.1-2.0/10.0.2-1.0 (Cloud Software). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the component Security Group Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. Impacted is confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

A race-condition flaw was discovered in openstack-neutron before 7.2.0-12.1, 8.x before 8.3.0-11.1, 9.x before 9.3.1-2.1, and 10.x before 10.0.2-1.1, where, following a minor overcloud update, neutron security groups were disabled. Specifically, the following were reset to 0: net.bridge.bridge-nf-call-ip6tables and net.bridge.bridge-nf-call-iptables. The race was only triggered by an update, at which point an attacker could access exposed tenant VMs and network resources.

The bug was discovered 07/27/2018. The weakness was published 07/26/2018 by Paul with Red Hat as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2017-7543 since 04/05/2017. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 210276 (RHEL 7 : openstack-neutron (RHSA-2017:2452)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 236465 (Red Hat Update for openstack-neutron (RHSA-2017:2449)).

Upgrading to version 7.2.0-12.1, 8.3.0-11.1, 9.3.1-2.1 or 10.0.2-1.1 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (210276) and SecurityFocus (BID 100237†). If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
