KeyCloak up to 2.5.0 SAML Request StaxParserUtil InResponseTo information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in KeyCloak up to 2.5.0. Affected is the function StaxParserUtil of the component SAML Request Handler. The manipulation of the argument InResponseTo with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

It was found that while parsing the SAML messages the StaxParserUtil class of keycloak before 2.5.1 replaces special strings for obtaining attribute values with system property. This could allow an attacker to determine values of system properties at the attacked system by formatting the SAML request ID field to be the chosen system property which could be obtained in the "InResponseTo" field in the response.

The bug was discovered 06/07/2018. The weakness was published 07/26/2018 with Red Hat as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2017-2582 since 11/30/2016. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 103526 (RHEL 7 : JBoss EAP (RHSA-2017:2808)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 236976 (Red Hat Update for Red Hat JBoss Enterprise Application Platform 6.4.21 (RHSA-2018:2743)).

Upgrading to version 2.5.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (103526) and SecurityFocus (BID 101046†). Similar entries are available at VDB-80102, VDB-101525, VDB-111715 and VDB-112171. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
