Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.17.10 (Operating System). It has been classified as critical. Affected is the function write_extent_buffer of the file fs/btrfs/extent-tree.c of the component btrfs Image Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
An issue was discovered in the Linux kernel through 4.17.10. There is out-of-bounds access in write_extent_buffer() when mounting and operating a crafted btrfs image, because of a lack of verification that each block group has a corresponding chunk at mount time, within btrfs_read_block_groups in fs/btrfs/extent-tree.c.
The bug was discovered 07/04/2018. The weakness was shared 07/27/2018 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2018-14610 since 07/26/2018. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
