ovirt-engine up to 4.1.7.5 Log File Password log file

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in ovirt-engine up to 4.1.7.5 (Virtualization Software) and classified as problematic. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component Log File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a log file vulnerability (Password). Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-532. Information written to log files can be of a sensitive nature and give valuable guidance to an attacker or expose sensitive user information. Impacted is confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

ovirt-engine before version 4.1.7.6 with log level set to DEBUG includes passwords in the log file without masking. Only administrators can change the log level and only administrators can access the logs. This presents a risk when debug-level logs are shared with vendors or other parties to troubleshoot issues.

The bug was discovered 11/12/2017. The weakness was released 07/27/2018 by Jiri Belka as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-15113 since 10/08/2017. The attack may be initiated remotely. Required for exploitation is a simple authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 257 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 220598 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2017-15113), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.

Upgrading to version 4.1.7.6 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (220598) and SecurityFocus (BID 101933†). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
