Linux Kernel up to 4.9.9 SELinux Attribute /proc/pid/attr setsockopt calculation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability marked as critical has been reported in Linux Kernel up to 4.9.9. This affects the function setsockopt of the file /proc/pid/attr of the component SELinux Attribute Handler. The manipulation leads to calculation. This vulnerability is listed as CVE-2017-2618. The attack must be carried out locally. There is no available exploit. It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.9.9 (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function setsockopt of the file /proc/pid/attr of the component SELinux Attribute Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a calculation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-682. The product performs a calculation that generates incorrect or unintended results that are later used in security-critical decisions or resource management. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's handling of clearing SELinux attributes on /proc/pid/attr files before 4.9.10. An empty (null) write to this file can crash the system by causing the system to attempt to access unmapped kernel memory.

The bug was discovered 04/19/2017. The weakness was presented 07/27/2018 by Paul with Red Hat (Website). The advisory is shared at marc.info. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-2618 since 11/30/2016. An attack has to be approached locally. A simple authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 99938 (EulerOS 2.0 SP2 : kernel (EulerOS-SA-2017-1072)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Huawei Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175973 (Debian Security Update for Linux (DSA 3791-1)).

Upgrading to version 4.9.10 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (99938) and SecurityFocus (BID 96272†). See VDB-94694, VDB-95265, VDB-96557 and VDB-96952 for similar entries. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
