A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Windows 8/RT/Server 2012 (Operating System). It has been declared as critical. The IPv6 implementation in Microsoft Windows 8, Windows Server 2012, and Windows RT does not properly validate packets, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (system hang) via crafted ICMPv6 Router Advertisement packets, aka "TCP/IP Version 6 (IPv6) Denial of Service Vulnerability."
The weakness was presented 02/11/2014 with Microsoft as MS14-006 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-0254 since 12/03/2013. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can only be initiated within the local network. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72429 (MS14-006: Vulnerability in ICMPv6 Could Allow Denial of Service (2904659)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90940 (Microsoft Windows IPv6 Denial of Service Vulnerability (MS14-006)).
Applying the patch MS14-006 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13532.
