A vulnerability was found in OpenJPEG 2.1.2 (Image Processing Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code block of the component JPEG2000 File Handler. An out-of-bounds read vulnerability was found in OpenJPEG 2.1.2, in the j2k_to_image tool. Converting a specially crafted JPEG2000 file to another format could cause the application to crash or, potentially, disclose some data from the heap.

The bug was discovered 03/22/2017. The weakness was published 08/01/2018 by Liu Bingchang with IIE (Website). The advisory is available at debian.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-9573 since 11/22/2016. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
