Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Insteon Hub 1012 (Network Management Software). Affected is some unknown functionality of the component HTTP Server. The manipulation of the argument s_vol as part of a HTTP Request leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
An attacker could send an authenticated HTTP request to trigger this vulnerability in Insteon Hub running firmware version 1012. At 0x9d01e7d4 the value for the s_vol key is copied using strcpy to the buffer at 0xa0001700. This buffer is maximum 12 bytes large (this is the maximum size it could be, it is possible other global variables are stored between this variable and the next one that we could identify), sending anything longer will cause a buffer overflow.
The bug was discovered 06/19/2018. The weakness was shared 08/02/2018 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at talosintelligence.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2017-16347 since 10/30/2017. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. A authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 44 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
