Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Insteon Hub 1013 (Network Management Software). This affects some unknown functionality of the component HTTP Server. The manipulation as part of a HTTP Requests leads to a access control vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-284. The product does not restrict or incorrectly restricts access to a resource from an unauthorized actor. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:
An exploitable permanent denial of service vulnerability exists in Insteon Hub running firmware version 1013. The firmware upgrade functionality, triggered via PubNub, retrieves signed firmware binaries using plain HTTP requests. The device doesn't check the kind of firmware image that is going to be installed and thus allows for flashing any signed firmware into any MCU. Since the device contains different and incompatible MCUs, flashing one firmware to the wrong MCU will result in a permanent brick condition. To trigger this vulnerability, an attacker needs to impersonate the remote server "cache.insteon.com" and serve a signed firmware image.
The bug was discovered 06/19/2018. The weakness was published 08/02/2018 (Website). The advisory is shared at talosintelligence.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2018-3834 since 01/02/2018. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
