Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in libpq up to 10.5. Affected by this vulnerability is the function PQescape of the component PostgreSQL Client Library. The manipulation as part of a Parameter leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
A vulnerability was found in libpq, the default PostgreSQL client library where libpq failed to properly reset its internal state between connections. If an affected version of libpq was used with "host" or "hostaddr" connection parameters from untrusted input, attackers could bypass client-side connection security features, obtain access to higher privileged connections or potentially cause other impact through SQL injection, by causing the PQescape() functions to malfunction. Postgresql versions before 10.5, 9.6.10, 9.5.14, 9.4.19, and 9.3.24 are affected.
The bug was discovered 08/09/2018. The weakness was presented 08/09/2018 by Andrew as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2018-10915 since 05/09/2018. The attack can be launched remotely. The requirement for exploitation is a single authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
