Laravel Framework up to 5.5.40/5.6.29 Token Encrypter.php decrypt X-XSRF-TOKEN deserialization

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Laravel Framework up to 5.5.40/5.6.29 and classified as critical. This issue affects the function decrypt of the file Illuminate/Encryption/Encrypter.php of the component Token Handler. The manipulation of the argument X-XSRF-TOKEN with an unknown input leads to a deserialization vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-502. The product deserializes untrusted data without sufficiently verifying that the resulting data will be valid. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

In Laravel Framework through 5.5.40 and 5.6.x through 5.6.29, remote code execution might occur as a result of an unserialize call on a potentially untrusted X-XSRF-TOKEN value. This involves the decrypt method in Illuminate/Encryption/Encrypter.php and PendingBroadcast in gadgetchains/Laravel/RCE/3/chain.php in phpggc. The attacker must know the application key, which normally would never occur, but could happen if the attacker previously had privileged access or successfully accomplished a previous attack.

The bug was discovered 08/07/2018. The weakness was disclosed 08/09/2018 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at laravel.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-15133 since 08/07/2018. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed by Ståle Pettersen/aushack in Ruby/Metasploit and been published before and not just after the advisory. The exploit is available at github.com. It is declared as attacked. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:Illuminate/Encryption/Encrypter.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog lists this issue since 01/16/2024 with a due date of 02/06/2024:

Apply mitigations per vendor instructions or discontinue use of the product if mitigations are unavailable.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Exploit-DB (47129). Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
