A vulnerability was found in OpenEMR up to 5.0.1.3 (Business Process Management Software). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the file portal/import_template.php of the component Patient Portal. The manipulation of the argument docid as part of a Directory leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
Directory traversal in portal/import_template.php in versions of OpenEMR before 5.0.1.4 allows a remote attacker authenticated in the patient portal to read arbitrary files via the "docid" parameter when the mode is set to get.
The bug was discovered 08/07/2018. The weakness was disclosed 08/13/2018 (GitHub Repository). The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2018-15140 since 08/07/2018. The attack can be initiated remotely. A single authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.
